Trading during extended business hours

You can trade stocks even when the market is not open. Pre-market trading and post-market trading are always an option for investors. These are known as extended markets.

There are three markets where stocks can be traded…

  • Pre-market trading takes place from 4:00 to 9:30 a.m. EST on Nasdaq and from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. EST on NYSE.
  • The regular market will trade from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. EST on Nasdaq and NYSE.
  • The after-hours market trades from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. EST on Nasdaq and NYSE.

However, some brokers have different trading hours for pre-market and post-market trading. For example, TD Ameritrade limits pre-market trading to between 8:00 am and 9:15 am. Check with your broker to find out when you can trade during extended hours.

There are many things to consider when trading during extended hours. First of all, market volatility is usually much higher during these hours. There are far fewer people trading during extended hours than during regular market hours. As a result, trading volume and liquidity may be lower than during regular market hours.

There is also no guarantee that your order will be executed due to a lack of liquidity. For some securities, the trading volume may be lower. As a result, it may be difficult to execute some of your trades.

Check directly with the international markets for their rules and guidelines for trading during the extended trading hours before placing an order.
